The Sherburn Hungate Reading Pathway
Our Approach to Phonics
At Sherburn Hungate Primary School, we use the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised programme to teach phonics. Phonics is taught daily in a clear, systematic way, helping children learn the sounds that letters and groups of letters represent and how to blend these sounds together to read words. Children take part in daily phonics lessons, with regular opportunities to practise and revisit their learning. They also bring home a carefully matched Little Wandle reading book, allowing them to practise the sounds and words they have been learning in school. This consistent approach helps children develop confidence, fluency and a love of reading.

Our Reading Scheme
When children can blend (and ultimately, demonstrate the building blocks to being able to read), we introduce them to Accelerated Reader. This usually occurs in Year 2, but can occur further down school if a child is ready.
Accelerated Reader matches a child's understanding of the text and their reading fluency to the right text, ensuring that all children are reading texts which support their reading progress at the right level.
Together with the MyOn reading library, our children quickly foster a love for reading that stays with them long after their time at Sherburn Hungate. Parents/carers can help this love of reading by reading widely and often with their children.
