Sherburn Hungate Primary School

PSHE

At Sherburn Hungate we aim to create a happy, purposeful and supportive environment where children are enabled to become successful learners, develop their full potential and achieve the highest educational standards they can. We encourage all our pupils to play a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community.

Our Curriculum

We During Key Stages 1 and 2, PSHE education offers both explicit and implicit learning opportunities and experiences which reflect pupils’ increasing independence and physical and social awareness as they move through the primary phase. It builds on the skills that pupils started to acquire during the Early Years Foundation stage (EYFS) to develop effective relationships, assume greater personal responsibility and manage personal safety, including online.

PSHE education helps pupils to cope with the changes at puberty, introduces them to a wider world and enables them to make an active contribution to their communities.

Wider PSHE

PSHE plays a key role throughout school. British Values are promoted, celebrated in class/assembly and shared with parents via the weekly newsletter.

What PSHE looks like in our School

Anti-Bullying Week takes place at school on a yearly basis. Staff are provided with age related activities.

We celebrate charity days across school like Red Nose Day and Children In Need. Children are given time to reflect and think about others.

Mindfulness Day happens yearly across school. The whole school participates and children are able to talk about their feelings and what to do when they feel upset/anxious/worries etc.

SMSC is threaded throughout our curriculum and is clearly planned into each topic through the school’s programme of Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education (PSHCE). Emphasis is placed upon the values required to be a well-rounded citizen of the future and on the British values of democracy, the rule of law, liberty, respect and tolerance.

Examples of this provision in school include:

  • School committees - representatives from each year group (Y1-6) are involved in the Junior Leadership Team (School Council) and the Eco Council.
  • Visits into school by specialists and organisations – ChildLine, faith leaders, sex education provision.
  • Visits from community leaders (e.g. magistrates, council members, local faith leaders).
  • Links with the wider community in Sherburn, across North Yorkshire through our membership of the YLT trust.
