SEND Local Offer
All North Yorkshire maintained schools have a similar approach to meeting the needs of pupils with Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities (SEND). They are supported by the Local Authority to ensure that all pupils, whatever their specific needs, make the best possible progress in school. The Local Authority publishes its Local Offer which provides information for children and young people with special educational needs (SEND) and their parents or carers in a single place.
North Yorkshire County Council have published their local offer for children and families from 0-25. This outlines what is available for children and young people with SEND in our Local Authority.
All schools are required to provide information to parents on how to seek additional support beyond that which is ‘normally available’ for their child.
The main aim of the local offer is to enable families to see readily the support they can expect locally without having to struggle to find the information. How we determine when a child has SEND
There are 4 areas of need according to the 2014 Code of Practice:
- Cognition and Learning
- Social, Mental and Emotional health
- Communication and Interaction
- Sensory and/or Physical Needs
Children are assessed regularly to ensure that they are making the expected progress. Some children may need extra help and support. The class teacher is usually the first person to notice that the child needs this extra help. If this is the case then they will ask for a meeting with the SENDCo to discuss strategies that may support the child. If these strategies are not working and the child is becoming significantly behind their peers in any area, then a discussion with parents/carers about the possibility of putting the child on the SEN register will take place.
Once a discussion has taken place, a final decision will be made by parents/carers, the class teacher and the SENDCo regarding the next appropriate steps.
Provision, Resources & Services
We ensure that all pupils, including those with SEND, are treated equally and have access to the full range of our provision. Sometimes, this means that we make reasonable adjustments to what we do so that we can provide appropriate access.
We are happy to discuss individual access requirements and adapt our Accessibility Plan as required so that it meets the needs of all of our children.
At present in school we have:
- All classes are at ground level. We have the capacity to move classes so that the year group is always accessible for the child.
- Doors at low level that are fully accessible
- An accessible toilet
- A gradual ramp between levels in our outdoor environment
- We can provide a translation service for those parents whose first language is not English
- Some classrooms and corridors are carpeted to reduce noise for the hearing impaired
- Parking at the entrance of school which is accessible for all staff & visitors.
- We can access specialist equipment if required.
We also have access to:
- Speech and language therapists
- Educational Psychologists
- Parent Support Advisers
- Enhanced Mainstream schools for specific learning difficulties, communication and interaction and BESD
- Specialist teachers for hearing and visually impaired children

Parents can also access SENDIASS – the Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Information, Advice and Support Services. The SENDIASS Coordinators can offer impartial advice and support which could include making a home visit to listen to any concerns you may have, or attend meetings with you. They may also be able to put you in touch with other organisations or parent support groups.
